When surfing the Internet via a router, we all want the speed to be as fast as possible. However, in reality, various issues affect our connection speed, such as the quality of network cables and interference from wireless networks. That said, many speed problems are caused by improper router setup.
1. To increase the download speed of your wireless network, you need to eliminate wireless interference. Keep cordless phones, cell phones, induction cookers, refrigerators, and other appliances that generate electromagnetic signals away from the wireless router. Since radio waves propagate in a circular pattern, it is best to place the wireless router in the center of the room, though the specifics should be based on your actual situation.
2. Set the router to use only one 802.11 protocol, as using mixed mode can reduce the data rate. By using only 802.11g clients, the router’s performance can be nearly doubled, increasing from 1Mbps to 2Mbps at a distance of 20 meters. You must ensure that all connected devices are set to use your chosen protocol. If they do not all support the protocol you selected, you will either have to abandon this suggestion or spend money on new equipment.
3. SSID is the local network name broadcast by the AP or wireless router鈥攖he name of your wireless network in the router settings. Its purpose is to allow only computers whose wireless network name matches the SSID value set on the router to connect. Unless necessary, you can disable the SSID broadcast and connect by manually entering the SSID. This is because disabling the SSID can save bandwidth usage, eliminate many redundant network messages, and improve download speed.
4. UPnP, often referred to as Universal Plug and Play, is a technology based on the TCP/IP protocol used on the Internet and within LANs. Users connecting via wireless networks are typically within an internal network, and enabling UPnP is necessary for the normal operation of download software. Currently, most wireless routers have this feature, though it is usually disabled by default. External networks do not necessarily need UPnP’s automatic port mapping feature, but it is still advisable to use UPnP in conjunction with a UPnP-compatible network firewall to automatically open ports.
The UPnP support module is not installed by default and needs to be installed manually. Go to Add/Remove Programs, navigate to Windows Components, in the Windows Components Wizard click on Network Services, then Details, and select the Universal Plug and Play checkbox. After restarting, the UPnP function will be enabled. The UPnP function within your download software also needs to be turned on.
