How to Upgrade Your TP-Link Router Firmware

When using a router to build a network, if you encounter issues like the router freezing or the network dropping frequently, you should consider a router upgrade to fix bugs in the router system and ensure it runs more efficiently.

Generally speaking, a router upgrade involves flashing the router’s firmware to update it to the latest version. This article uses the TP-Link TL-WR541G+ wireless router as an example to give you a detailed step-by-step guide on how to perform a TP-Link router upgrade.

1. First, log on to the official website of the corresponding brand to find and download the firmware upgrade file for your specific router model.

2. Next, click through the “Products” / “Wireless Products” links on the site and locate your target router model on the corresponding page. Of course, since there are many models, finding it directly on the page might be a little difficult.

3. Alternatively, you can use the “Product Search” feature on the official website’s homepage. Enter the specific product model, for example, type in the keyword “TL-WR541G+” and click the “Search” button. This allows you to quickly find the target router product on TP-Link’s official website.

4. Click on the target router product to enter its specific page, then click on the “Downloads” tab. On this page, you will see many versions of the upgrade firmware.

5. Before officially downloading the file, you must ensure that the target download file matches the specific model and hardware version of your local router device; otherwise, the router upgrade will fail.

6. Generally, the hardware version information for the router can be found directly on the label on the device. For example, if the router used on the local network is model TL-WR541G+ and its hardware version number is V4, you should click on the “TL-WR541G+V1/TL-WR541GV4(070728) Upgrade File” link on the tab page, and then download the corresponding router upgrade file to your local workstation’s hard drive.

7. After downloading the router upgrade file, use a network cable to connect the workstation where the file is saved directly to the router.

8. Once the physical connection is successful, use a standard extraction tool to unzip the TP-Link router upgrade file to a temporary folder. After opening the temporary folder window, you will see that the upgrade file contains an executable file named “tftpd32.exe” and a file with the extension “.bin”. This “.bin” file is actually the operating system file for the router. You must save this file in the same folder as the “tftpd32.exe” file. Then, double-click the “tftpd32.exe” file to automatically set up your local workstation as a simple TFTP server.

9. Next, on your local workstation, run the IE browser and enter the router’s default IP address in the address bar (this address can usually be found in the router’s user manual, and it is often 192.168.1.1 by default). Press Enter to open the router’s backend login page. Enter the system administrator account name and password, and click “OK” to enter the router’s backend management interface.

10. In the left-hand menu of the management interface, click “System Tools” / “Firmware Upgrade”. On the right-hand side of the “Firmware Upgrade” page, you will see the router’s current hardware and software versions, as well as two text fields. In the “TFTP Server IP Address” field, enter the IP address of your local workstation. In the “File Name” field, copy and paste the name of the “.bin” file from your local temporary folder.

11. After confirming that the information above is set correctly, click the “Upgrade” button on the page. The router system will then automatically perform the firmware version upgrade. If no accidents occur during the TP-Link router upgrade, the router system will automatically restart after a moment, and the upgrade task will be completed successfully.

After the TP-Link router upgrade, the router device will not only see a significant improvement in operating performance but will also have its security performance guaranteed.
