How to use My Network Places in Windows XP on a LAN for computer-to-computer access, shared file transfer, and printer sharing (other systems are similar) (all computers to be shared must be configured)

1. Enable the GUEST account

(Control Panel → User Accounts → Turn on Guest account)

2. Set the same workgroup

(Right-click My Computer → Properties → Computer Name → Change → Workgroup (restart required))

3. Install the network “Services” protocol

(Control Panel → Network Connections → Right-click “Local Area Connection” → Properties → General → Click “Install” → Service)

4. Run “Set up a home or small office network” once

(Control Panel → Network Setup Wizard; or My Network Places → Set up a home or small office network) — Enable file sharing

5. Share the files or folders you want to share

(Right-click the folder to share, select “Sharing and Security” → Check “Share this folder on the network”; or copy the files to be shared into the Shared Documents folder)

6. Share a printer
