Google Tells Oracle Android Now Protected by GPL

Google has replaced its Java API implementation in the next version, Android N, with OpenJDK, the open-source version of Oracle’s JDK (Java Development Kit). Oracle uses the GPL license for the OpenJDK project.

Immediately afterward, Google notified the court that it had released a new version of the Android platform with Oracle’s explicit authorization, as Oracle had licensed Google to freely use OpenJDK under the free and open-source GPL license.

The legal battle between Google and Oracle will continue, but the focus of the dispute will revolve around older versions of Android. In Google’s view, the new version remains unaffected.

Google’s statement that Android N has already been released is an interesting claim; in reality, only the source code has been changed, and the official commercial release is still some time away.
