Netgear Router Setup Tips and Best Practices

How many users of wireless routers find the instructions confusing and don’t know how to set them up? In general, using the factory default settings might work sometimes, but the wireless network is unencrypted at this point, posing a security risk. Therefore, it’s not recommended. Below, we’ll use a NETGEAR router as an example to discuss some tips for router setup.

I. Let’s first look at its external structure. On the front panel, we see from left to right: the PWR light, SYS light, WLAN light, 1-4 LAN lights, WAN light, and a WPS light.

1. PWR: Power Indicator. Solid off means no power; solid on means it’s powered up.

2. SYS: System Status Indicator. Solid off means the device is initializing; blinking means it’s working normally.

3. WLAN: Wireless Status Indicator. Solid off means wireless function is not enabled; blinking means wireless function is enabled.

4. 1-4LAN: LAN Status Indicator. Solid off means the port is not connected to a device; blinking means the port is transmitting data; solid on means the port is connected to a device.

5. WAN: WAN Status Indicator. Solid off means the port is not connected to a device; blinking means it’s transmitting data; solid on means the port is connected to a device.

6. WPS: Wi-Fi Protected Setup Indicator. Blinking green means secure connection is in progress; solid green means secure connection successful; blinking red means secure connection failed.

II. Now let’s look at the router’s back panel. There is one WAN port and four LAN ports. The WAN port is used to connect to the Internet, while the LAN ports are used to connect to your computer’s network card. Connect these ports with network cables, then plug in the power, and you can proceed to configure the wireless router.

III. Once all cables are connected, enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 into the IE address bar and press Enter. A login window will pop up. Enter the username and password (both are admin by default), and you can access the configuration interface. The default username, password, and IP address are usually printed on the label on the bottom of the router. The wireless broadband router allows connection via wired or wireless methods, but for first-time configuration, a wired connection is recommended.

IV. For beginners, the wireless router offers a very convenient Setup Wizard, which can be completed in just a few steps. Let’s first see how to use the wizard to set up the wireless router.

1. Click Setup Wizard on the left, then click Next. You can see that the router supports three common internet connection types. In actual use, you should choose based on your specific situation. If you have an Ethernet broadband connection with a dynamic IP, select the corresponding option and click Next.

2. This is where you set up the wireless network. We can choose to enable or disable the wireless status. If the wireless status is disabled, the wireless network will be unavailable
