About Dedicated Fiber Optics and Regular Fiber Optics

In fact, regular fiber optics are not much different from the old ADSL telephone line broadband — except they are more stable and can support higher speeds. However, this so-called fiber has asymmetric upload and download speeds; downloads feel fast but uploading things is terrible. This is also why some people feel lag when playing online games while running KuGou Music, PPS, or similar apps, because these programs clog up the upload pipeline during operation, hindering data exchange between the game and the server. So if you feel your network is laggy, please first check whether such programs are running in the background — don’t make our maintenance staff come over just because of this small issue.

Now let’s talk about dedicated fiber optics. Many people think dedicated fiber is the same as the personal fiber broadband they subscribe to — that’s wrong. Dedicated line — what does “dedicated line” mean? Just by the name you can tell: it’s a special channel leading to the user, a VIP channel. And the price is equally steep. A regular 2 Mbps dedicated line back in 2006 in my small town cost 900 yuan per month — yes, per month, not per year. That’s the line installed at the elementary school where my mom worked, and it could serve 20+ machines simultaneously without lag. Many people see telecoms now advertising things like “100 Mbps fiber to the home” with not-so-expensive pricing — only three or four hundred yuan per month — and think they could open an internet café and support over a hundred machines with it. So why not get a few lines and combine them to a thousand Mbps, with download speeds of 1000/8 = 125 MB/s — amazing, right? Awesome!!! Buddy, stop dreaming and go to sleep. That’s impossible, unless the people at your place have very low internet demands. Otherwise, the chances of getting your computers smashed are extremely high.
Let’s talk about dedicated line downloads. Many people think a 10 Mbps dedicated fiber line downloads at around 10/8 = 1.25 MB/s, but in my actual testing, I found some questions about that. On a 10 Mbps dedicated line, I’ve personally measured downloads generally around 3 MB/s, and for some things like online game downloads, it’s even more insane — reaching 8 MB/s or even 10 MB/s. What’s going on here (anyone knowledgeable care to explain)? Also, dedicated lines are said to have data access priority (I can’t confirm this myself — hoping an expert can enlighten me). I’ve heard from engineers that theoretically, when a dedicated line and a personal line access the network simultaneously, the dedicated line gets priority (this would be great for snatching up Xiaomi flash sales).
Finally, let me add: you can’t apply for a dedicated line at a regular service hall. Usually you need to go to the telecom bureau for approval, where a marketing manager will discuss it with you personally, and you’ll need to commit to a usage period and make a lump-sum payment. For example, if you can pay tens of thousands of yuan upfront for a year’s dedicated line fees, the telecom bureau will be more than happy to pull the dedicated line for you.
PS: The above is based on my personal work experience. Please point out any mistakes.
